"갈릭걸스"라는 별명이 붙은 한국의 여자 컬링팀의 인기에 대한 기사가 
국내는 물론 외신들도 재밌게 다뤄지고 있다. 

마늘의 고장인 의성 출신의 네명의 선수들은 재밌는 일화를 연일 만들어 내며,
메달로의 행진을 하고있다. 주장인 김은정 선수를 비롯한 네명의 국가대표팀 
전부가 김씨라는 것도 흥미로와 한다. 
소셜미디아도 빗자루와 청소기등으로 선수들을 패러디한 사진과 영상들로 넘치고 있다. 
특히 경기 내내 김은정 선수의 변함없는 진지한 표정이 제일 인기를 끌고 있어 흥미롭다.

도데체 영미는 누구길래 저렇게 불러데나 싶기도 한다. 
실제로 김영미 선수는 이 팀의 중심에 있다고 볼 수 있다. 
주장인 김은정 선수는 영미의 친구, 다른 두 선수는 영미 선수의 동생과 동생의 친구다. 
"팀킴"이라고 불리는 이 팀이 더 친근감이 느껴지는 것은

김영미 선수는 인터뷰에서 올림픽 동안 게임에 집중하기 위해 핸드폰을 꺼두어서 
인터넷에서의 돌풍적인 인기에 대해 전혀 모르고 있었다고. 
게다가 그동안 국제 경기에서도 한국 여자 컬링은 전혀 관심을 못받아 
방청객 석이 텅 비어있기 일수였기에 전혀 예상치 못한 반응이라는 것이다. 게임이
진행 될 수록 강릉 컬링 경기장은 마늘소녀들을 응원하는 방청객으로 가득 차 있다. 
<월스트리트저널>은 "불과 지난해까지 한국 컬링은 지도자 부재, 
적은 인기, 열악한 훈련 시설 등으로 어려움을 겪었다"라며 
"그러나 한국 여자 컬링은 올림픽 메달을 놓고 경쟁하는 깜짝 스타가 됐다"라고 칭찬했다.

GANGNEUNG, South Korea — South Korean women curling team, 
nicknamed "Garlic Girls" to go with their other monikers, have become 
overnight internet sensations following their stellar performance and cool
-headedness at the Pyeongchang Games.
Kim Eun-jung's foursome became the first Korean rink to reach the Olympic semi-finals 
after Tuesday's 9-6 win over the United States. 
At the 2014 Sochi Olympics, South Korea's women team finished eighth.
Their fairytale run has been celebrated on social media by fans 
who posted memes and parody videos, 
with floor mops and robot vacuum cleaners, that went viral.
one of the best-known memes is a collage of South Korean curling 
skip Kim's never-changing facial ｅxpression, irrespective of the situation.
Team member Kim Yeong-mi said they had no clue about their newfound
 fame as they had turned off mobile phones to avoid distractions.
"Even when we had a national competition, 
we played without any crowd because curling has been unpopular
 and not well known, we didn't expect many people would come and 
watch us," she told reporters on Wednesday.
"We're just grateful for that."
Several factors worked in their favor.
For starters, all the five curlers 
-- Kim Eun-jung, Kim Yeong-mi, Kim Kyeong-ae, Kim Seon-yeong and Kim Cho-hi, 
have the same last name.
No wonder fans also call them "Team Kim."
While Kim Yeong-mi and Kim Kyeong-ae are siblings, 
all five hail from the same hometown of Uiseong, 
a county famous for garlic. Understandably, 
they are called the "Garlic Girls."
Furthermore, they are linked to Kim Yeong-mi in one way or the other.
 They are either Yeong-mi's sister, or a friend of Yeong-mi's sister,
 or at least her close friend.
Reflecting South Koreans' newfound interest in curling and the players,
 the Gangneung Curling Centre was nearly packed with spectators
 when games were held. 
on Wednesday, the curling team beat Olympic Athletes from
 Russia 11-2 in the round robin session 11, continuing their winning streak.
"I wasn't interested in either curling or 
the Olympics but after watching curling games at home,
 I've started to like them, they're so cool," said Park Jin-ju, a 31-year-old housewife 
who came with her husband to watch the game.

Park added she and her husband bought the tickets 
at the last minute and left their house in Cheonan, 
about a three-hour drive to Gangneung, at 4 a.m. to watch the team's morning game.
"We're getting a huge and warm support from our fans because they are cheering us 
so enthusiastically, and hope they can keep rooting for us," Kim Yeong-mi said.
